When Memorial Day comes around, all of us get excited because we get extra days off, the beach is waiting for us, barbeques with friends, fireworks, drinks, and general fun in the sun. It wasn’t until 9 years ago, when I joined the military, that I learned the real reason for Memorial Day.
There is only a small percentage of Americans who really know the purpose of Memorial Weekend. Memorial Day: it is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day to celebrate the lives of the countless men and women who have given so much for our freedom, and for the wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, young children who are forced to move on with life with that void.
This past weekend I traveled to the Lonestar state for a little of all of the above, but most importantly, honoring those who have fallen, those who continue to serve this great nation and for the ones who have/are returning home with life-altering injuries. I was supporting an organization called Operation Finally Home, which builds mortgage free homes for troops wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. Please take a moment to look at some of the pictures I took of that amazing weekend. I hope that in between all the festivities we not only remember/honor the fallen but find ways to help those who return fighting the new war. It's time we serve for them since they have served for us!
Check out the above trailer for a new documentary I am a part of called "TRIAL BY FIRE: Lives Re-forged." As described on its website, "TRIAL BY FIRE: Lives Re-forged" is "a feature length documentary about burn survivors–ordinary people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film follows their journeys as they navigate the challenging physical and emotional obstacles toward recovery, reclaiming first their lives and then their dreams."
